D. H. LAWRENCE (1885-1930), one of the greatest English authors, transformed the art of fiction.

His The Rainbow has become one of the most widely read and influential books ever written.

Though tame by modern standards, Lawrence's candid treatment of sex and the power it plays within relationships caused The Rainbow to be prosecuted in 1915, in an infamous obscenity trial as a result of which all copies were seized and ordered burned. After this, it was prohibited for sale in Britain for 11 years.

Published in hundreds of editions and translated into virtually every modern language, it has not been out of print since 1915.

The author of numerous classic novels, poems and short stories, including The Rainbow, Women In Love, The Plumed Serpent, and Lady Chatterley’s Lover, Lawrence is considered to be a central figure in the development of the modern novel.
