HEYWOOD BROUN (1888–1939) was a celebrated American journalist. He worked as a theatre critic, novelist, sportswriter, newspaper columnist and editor in New York City. After attending Harvard, he worked for several New York papers including the New York Tribune and New York World and the New York Telegram and World Telegram. While at the World, he began a syndicated column, “It Seems to Me,” which he wrote until his death. He founded the American Newspaper Guild, now known as The Newspaper Guild. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Broun is best remembered for his writing on social issues and his championing of the underdog. He believed that journalists could help right wrongs, especially social ills.
