Bunner Sisters
Bunner Sisters
EDITH WHARTON (1862-1937), one of the greatest American authors, transformed the art of fiction. The Pulitzer Prize winning author of numerous novels and short stories, including The House of Mirth, Ethan Frome, The Descent of Man, and Bunner Sisters, she is considered to be a central figure in the development of the modern novel.
Bunner Sisters, published in hundreds of editions and translated into virtually every modern language, has not been out of print since 1920. It is an absorbing story of two sisters just getting by in 1890s New York, and what happens when they make the mistake of trusting a man. A scathing indictment of how women over 30 years of age were treated at that time, Bunner Sisters power lies in exposing how destructive and sentimental notions of womanhood were to women who did not realize their own strengths.
